ITANAGAR, Sept 12: While on a visit to Bamboo Processing Centre, Poma today, the Governor J P Rajkhowa said that financial assistance must be provided to the trained persons by the banks and financial institutions as part of the State Programme to generate and provide employment.

The Governor said this after he was informed that 60 persons were provided training in the last financial year, against capacity for 360 trainees in a year because of paucity of funds. The Governor stating that Credit Deposit Ratio of the State stands at 21.2 %, whereas the All India Ratio is 78.1%, he desired that the Government of Arunachal Pradesh should take up the matter with banks and provide positive support to the Centre.

The instructors also informed that most of the machines installed in 2009, when the Centre was set up are not functioning and outdated.

The Governor further advised the villagers to focus on value added handicrafts that fetch more profit than incense sticks, where production cost is much higher than the return per kilogram of sticks. He suggested them to make handicraft items like ‘Murha’ and small chairs for children from cane and bamboo, which he opined will sell like hot cakes.

Fate of PMEGP beneficiaries hangs in balance

Correspondent

ROING, Sept 12: The fate of 25 selected beneficiaries under PMEGP hangs in balance as the Roing HDFC bank branch has no specific answer when the bank loan will be provided to them.

According to information received, HDFC bank branch is not in a position to disburse the bank loan to the beneficiaries as the subsidy amount of previous PMEGP loans are yet to be cleared by the Khadi and Village Industry Commission.

Kiine-Naane Farmer's Welfare Association (KNFWA) president, Vijay Damin informed that annoyed by the delay in disbursement of bank loan to the beneficiaries, he has approached the HDFC bank branch manager to enquire into the matter. When enquired, according to Damin, the bank Branch Manager (BM) revealed that the bank will only be able to release the loan if the subsidy amounts of the previous loans under PMEGP are cleared by the Khadi and Village Industry Commission (KVIC). "We were told by the BM that the KVIC is yet to clear last year's subsidy amount of Rs 3,60,000. The BM has assured us that the loan will be disbursed as soon as the bank receives this amount from the KVIC", Damin said.

According to a bank source, there has been no response from the KVIC, to the repeated letters sent by the BM regarding the matter. "A letter in this regard was also forwarded to the DC Roing", said the source.

Altogether, 25 beneficiaries of the PMEGP programme were entitled to receive loan from the HDFC Bank in the month of March last as per Government norms. "Even after repeated pleas, the bank has not disbursed the loan yet", said a representative of the Association.

One of the beneficiary informed that they had been formally selected in September 2014 after facing a selection board comprising Panchayat members, EAC, DDI, ADI, CM SBI and BM HDFC. "We were provided three days entrepreneurship training from March 2 after our selection. We were also provided certificates for the same, but have not received our loan till now", he informed. Damin said, "PMEGP is meant to provide upliftment to the unemployed and promote self employment, but this issue between the HDFC bank and the KVIC is depriving the people of their rights. The hopeful beneficiaries have not only spent a lot of money throughout the process, but also lost valuable time. We want this issue between the two agencies to be resolved as soon as possible, otherwise, we will have to launch a democratic movement for justice".

State to host Sahitya Akademi session in Dec

ITANAGAR, Sept 12: Sahitya Akademi, India’s National Academy of Letters, an organisation dedicated to the promotion of literature in Indian languages since its foundation in March 1954, would hold its session for the second time here in December.

This was informed by Sahitya Akademi awardee and Arunachal Pradesh Literary Society president Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi during the 71st sitting of APLS at State Jawaharlal Nehru Museum here today.

It may be recalled here that about hundred poets of different languages from across the country led by Sahitya Akademi president Sunil Gagopadhyay and secretary Agrahara Krishna Murthy had participated in Sahitya Akademi’s Multi-Lingual Poets’ meet on March 29th 2011, organised at the same venue at the initiative of Thongchi.

The state literary field is drawing outside attention as Bhupen Hazarika Cultural Trust (BHCT) headed by Kalpana Azmi has also conveyed Thongchi its desire to organise the 98th birthday celebration of Bhupenda at Itanagar.

The information was lauded by the gathering who congratulated Thongchi on conferment of first Bhupen Hazarika Samanyoy Award on him on Sep 7th by the BHCT.

Arunachal Pradesh had joined the nation in paying rich tributes to India’s globally famous cultural icon Bhupenda after he departed for his heavenly abode and a Thongchi-led team had joined the last rites at Guwahati, while Chief Minister Nabam Tuki had brought his mortal remains from Guwahati which were immersed in various rivers of the state by the APLS.

Bhupenda was born in 1926 at a place near present Shantipur and Bolung village, now in Lower Dibang Valley district, then in Sadiya under NEFA. In his autobiography, ‘Moi eti jajabor’, Bhupenda had mentioned how Adi mothers of Bolung had breast-fed him. This had prompted the CM to take many decisions to immortalise his memory including a film on his life.

The APLS members also recalled the invaluable services rendered by Binny Yanga to the humanity, who died on Sep 3rd last with Thongchi terming her ‘Mother Teresa of Arunachal’. Information Secretary Pradeep Kumar describing her as a living embodiment of love and affection before Research vice president, Dr. Tage Tada, Research Director, Batem Pertin, Dr Pekba Ringu and Yabin Zirdo, narrated their personal memories. Woes of once famous park

[ Tom Simai ]

The 15th Tiger Reserve of India Namdapha National Park (Project Tiger) is a treasure-trove as it is considered the nation’s only bio-reserve where all the four wildcats (tiger, leopard, clouded leopard and snow leopard) live together.

The park’s magical spell can entice the global backpackers to delve upon its opulent bio-reserves brimming with fascinating flora and fauna. Despite having all the tempting ingredients, unfortunately, one way or other, we’ve failed to trigger the magical spell that would have refurbished the destiny of the park and ignited an economic revolution.

The deprivation and delinquency continuing since many years has disintegrated all its essence and capability. Currently, dangling between ‘extinction and existence’ the park surely requires some concerted endeavours for it to breathe or live again.

NNP (Project Tiger) has transformed Miao and Changlang District, from an invisible dot to a recognizable spot on the face of global tourism, but yet, we’ve not been able to reciprocate the generosity. Along with the wildlife and tourism department, we the indigenous society still treat it with utmost disrespect. What can be more disgracing than this that the most priceless property has become a worthless asset in our hand?

Besides others, the pivotal element for the park’s success is the tourist population, where even the domestic tourist, people of Changlang are not interested to peek around, how can it attract national and international tourists. How will someone from far off plan their journey to this amazing wilderness if we are inept to promise them an adventure of a lifetime or at least some Kodak moments?

Being the home to countless endangered and undiscovered species of flora and fauna, NNP (Project Tiger) has the potential to gift the sub-division unimaginable opportunities. As of now, we don’t see any of those gifts coming in the way of the common people, which means that magnificent potential still remains unexplored and unknown. Thanks to the laxity and inability of the Wildlife and Tourism department, it has prevented those life changing opportunities from changing a single life.

We don’t need big and flashy ideas for basic improvisation of the park. A small but collective and calculative step can accomplish the task or alter its fate. Once we achieve that, opportunity and opulence will be a frequent event for all walks of life in Miao sub-division. Until then let’s continue with the blame game because we are good at it.  (The writer can be reached at simaitom@gmail.com)
